Story

Jen loved to collect and with her passion for travel she was at one time collecting visits to capital cities. On this occasion we were in the Baltic capital of Lithuania,Vilnius. After a day of site seeing in the capital we hired a driver to take us out into the countryside. Temperatures were around the 2 degree mark as it was February. The trip included a visit to a mushroom farm, which might seem a little out of the ordinary but it housed a museum and a restaurant selling of course dishes made with mushrooms ! We arrived about midday and since it was a little chilly we decided to eat a snack and warm up with a hot drink. Everything on the menu included 🍄. The museum turned out to be outside and comprised statues of Oligarchs,Politburo members and heroes of the Soviet Union gathered up from all the former Soviet controlled states to prevent them being destroyed. As we wandered around the statutes the climate became markedly colder and the snow thicker. Soon the statues disappeared. Our lovely guide bundled us into the car and took us to a castle on a completely frozen lake. Some men were sliding portal toilets across the ice. Apparently a popular game at the time. It was beautiful but so cold. The next day we were hoping for a bit of respite but alas it had plummeted to minus 23 ! We spent the day walking from Shop to shop drinking hot chocolate and some interesting local spirits with bizarre names and taste. At one point we thought Jen was about to become orthodox as we sort refuge in a church which it was hard to extract her from. I think we were all a bit relieved to travel to the warmth of the airport that evening. We travelled home sandwiched between two women covered in bling and their hefty minders trying to figure out how they’d managed to walk to the plane in very steep gold stilettos, which Jen loved of course. Took us at least a week to defrost.
